Heavy Vehicle Permits

Heavy vehicles use the Newcastle road network to access businesses and associated Port activities.

To manage heavy vehicle transport and to protect and sustainably maintain the local road network City of Newcastle, in conjunction with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), process and assess applications for heavy vehicles using the local road network within the Newcastle Local Government Area (LGA).

As stated by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator:

“…local government is recognised in legislation as being responsible for consenting to access to restricted access vehicles on their roads, and the conditions under which they will operate. The HVNL [Heavy Vehicle National Law] requires local government to formally consent to the operation on their roads…”

To apply for such a permit, it is required that applicants use the procedures set out by the NHVR.
