About Council

The City of Greater Newcastle grew out the amalgamation of 11 independent Council areas in 1938. These separate municipalities developed mostly through coal discoveries and all, with the exception of Carrington, were 'private towns' which grew from land grants to different companies and individuals. Alderman A. Griffiths was the first Mayor of Greater Newcastle.
