Living Lab

We're actively working with partners to establish the city as a ‘Living Lab’, a place to encourage experimentation, research and the development of solutions to city challenges and issues. The Living Lab framework includes digital and technology capabilities that enable prototyping, testing and evaluation of new products, services and ideas. It also includes the ‘soft infrastructure’ – workshops, user groups and community panels - to involve city residents in trialling new ideas and in citizen science projects.

We have recently launched its capability to deploy connected sensors across the LGA to help us understand our environment and make more informed decisions. The Internet of Things is an advanced technology that incorporates the capacity to sense and obtain data to understand the environment and urban systems and assets. These sensors and the data they generate can help Council to better understand and respond to issues such as urban heat island effect, air pollution, flood management and water sustainability.

IoT Sensor Hardware Lab.

The IoT Sensor Lab forms part of our emerging Living Lab and will enable the city and whole local government area to be used as an experimental testbed, for progressing research, product development and entrepreneurial activity.

Research partners, industry and entrepreneurs will be able to access our IoT sensor lab hardware to develop new technologies and help solve city challenges.

Our LoRaWAN network now provides coverage across the entire Newcastle LGA. Giving us the potential to put a wide variety of sensors into the field at a low cost.

Its all part of transforming Newcastle as a smart, liveable sustainable global city.
