The Walk Smart initiative is aimed at creating safer pedestrian routes for people visiting the Newcastle CBD, Hamilton and Islington areas at night.
These routes have been identified in consultation with Police and Liquor Accord representatives. The routes have better lighting, more pedestrian activity and traffic, and a commitment from local police for regular patrols.
To further enhance safety along these routes, Council is working in partnership with Ausgrid, Newcastle Now and Hamilton Business Improvement Association, local businesses and commercial property owners to upgrade lighting. By increasing people’s feelings of safety, the program aims to further increase the use of these routes, providing more informal surveillance from passers by, and further improving safety.
Walk Smart routes are also close to key public transport locations including bus stops and train stations.
Maps of routes are also currently available in licensed premises or you can download the Walk Smart map (PDF).
